Who is Maudy Ayunda?
Told she might repeat a year, she took two degrees at once.
She learned to read at three, and the first word she read was the name of the newspaper in the house. She was a quiet child who could be found reading in a corner during family gatherings. She has described education as a space that is entirely hers and under her own control, where success or failure is hers to account for.
She moved from one Jakarta school to another in the second grade and arrived as the only child in the class who did not know an English speaking environment. The headmaster warned her and her mother that she might have to repeat a year. She finished at that school, went on to the British School in Jakarta and became head of the student council there.
Meanwhile she had been working since she was ten. A production company scouted her at school and cast her straight into the lead of a 2005 film, which won her a best actress award at a Jakarta festival and a nomination at another. At eleven she published a collection of seventeen short stories about forest animals and gave the proceeds to victims of the 2004 tsunami. She kept acting through school, released her first album in 2011 with a song she had written herself on it, and has since made four.
She was accepted to Columbia and took a gap year instead. Then she read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford and graduated with high honours. In 2019 she was accepted by both Harvard and Stanford, chose Stanford, and took a master's in education and a master of business administration at the same time. She married a man she met there in May 2022.
She came home and kept going: films, a fourth album in 2024 with three singles she wrote, a soundtrack for a Korean film in 2025, a YouTube channel that mixes entertainment with teaching, and a mentorship and scholarship programme she set up in 2018 through her foundation and relaunched in 2023. She has been on thirty under thirty lists in Indonesia and across Asia.
