Who is Bruce Springsteen?

The third record had to work.

He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1949 and signed to Columbia Records by John Hammond in 1972, at twenty two. His debut album came in 1973 and the second later the same year. Neither sold. In the record industry of the time, two commercial failures was usually the end of a contract, and the third album was, by every account of that period, the last chance he was going to get.

Born to Run, released in 1975, is that third album. It took an enormous amount of time and argument to make and it worked. What followed is one of the longest sustained bodies of work in popular music: Darkness on the Edge of Town in 1978, The River in 1980, which was his first number one, Nebraska in 1982, which is a stark solo record made on a four track machine and the least commercial thing he could have released, and Born in the U.S.A. in 1984, which became one of the best selling albums ever made.

He has kept going: Tunnel of Love in 1987, The Rising in 2002, which was his first studio record with the full band in eighteen years, then Magic, Wrecking Ball, High Hopes, Western Stars, Letter to You and Only the Strong Survive. He won an Academy Award in 1994 for Streets of Philadelphia, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, published his autobiography Born to Run in 2016 and performed Springsteen on Broadway in 2017, 2018 and 2021. He has twenty Grammy Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors of 2009, the Presidential Medal of Freedom of 2016 and the National Medal of Arts of 2023.
