Who is Michelle Zauner?
One year became a record and a book.
She was born in Seoul in 1989 and raised in the United States. She was making records before she left school, releasing Boats to Boxes under the name Little Girl, Big Spoon in 2006, and put out an EP with the band Post Post in 2009. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2011, on an independent major she designed herself in creative production, which is a fair description of the career that followed.
She played in the band Little Big League, which released two albums in 2013 and 2014. Her mother died of cancer in 2014. What she did with that year is the reason her name is on this list: she made a record about it and then, years later, she wrote a book about it, and both of them are good.
Psychopomp, her first album as Japanese Breakfast, came in 2016. Soft Sounds from Another Planet followed in 2017 and Jubilee in 2021, which was nominated for a Grammy. She also composed the soundtrack for the video game Sable. Crying in H Mart, published in 2021, spent sixty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and won an American Book Award in 2022, the same year Time named her one of the hundred most influential people. For Melancholy Brunettes came in 2025, and a second memoir is scheduled for 2027.
