Who is Son Heung-min?
Seventeen years without a trophy, and then he lifted one.
He was born in Chuncheon and came up through the academy of FC Seoul, where at fifteen he worked a home match as a ball boy. His father had played, and had strong views about how his son should be brought on. In August 2008, at sixteen, he dropped out of his school football club and went to the youth academy of Hamburger SV in Germany. He was so set on making it in Europe, his agent said, that he learned German by watching episodes of a cartoon about a sponge.
He signed his first professional contract on his eighteenth birthday, scored his first league goal a few months later, moved to Bayer Leverkusen for a club record fee in 2013, and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2015. What followed at Spurs was ten years of being very good and winning nothing. He ran the length of the pitch past seven Burnley players for a goal that won the Puskas Award. He shared the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022 with twenty three goals, the first Asian player to take it. He became the first Asian player to score a hundred goals in the league, and then the club captain. He also lost a Champions League final and a League Cup final.
In November 2022 a collision fractured the orbital bone in his left eye, weeks before a World Cup. He played anyway, in a mask that covered half his face, and set up the assist that beat Portugal and took South Korea into the round of sixteen for the first time in twelve years. Four years earlier he had captained the under twenty three side to gold at the Asian Games, which won the whole squad exemption from military service. He did the basic training regardless, finishing in the top five of a hundred and fifty seven.
On 21 May 2025 he came off the bench in the Europa League final, and Tottenham won it. It was the club's first trophy in seventeen years and the first of his professional career. He left that August for Los Angeles FC in a record deal, and scored a goal there that was voted the goal of the year.
