Who is Gennady Golovkin?
Passed over for years, and he became the man they avoided.
He grew up in Karaganda, a mining city in central Kazakhstan, in a neighbourhood that was rough on a boy. His older brothers, Sergey and Vadim, sent him out to fight bigger and older boys, and by eight he was boxing. Both of those brothers died in Soviet Army service before he was grown, Vadim in 1990 and Sergey in 1994. The steadiness people later read as calm was built early, and at a cost.
He was very good very young, and it did not open the doors it should have. He took silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics, turned professional in 2006, and then spent years being placed behind safer names by promoters who did not want to risk their own men against him. When he finally left that arrangement and moved his base to America, television saw him for the first time in 2012, and what it saw was a fighter almost nobody wanted to meet. He won a world title, unified belts, and ran his defenses to twenty, tied with Bernard Hopkins for the middleweight record.
The line does not run straight up. Two fights with Canelo Alvarez, a draw many scored his way and then a decision loss, sit in it plainly. What is worth reading in his arc is the patience: the long stretch where he was better than his billing and kept turning up anyway, until the sport could no longer look past him.
