Who is Coco Gauff?
She did not want to practise, and then one tournament decided it.
Her father played college basketball and later worked as a health care executive, her mother was a track and field athlete at university and worked as an educator, and she has two younger brothers. She lived her early years in Atlanta and began playing tennis at six. When she was seven the family moved back to Delray Beach for better training, and from eight she worked with a coach at a local academy.
Her own account of the beginning is not a prodigy story. She has said she was not much of a team person and loved tennis, but was so-so about it at first because she did not want to practise at all and just wanted to play with her friends. What changed it was one junior tournament, at eight, after which she decided she would do this for the rest of her life.
Her parents then gave up their own careers to focus on training her. Her father, who had limited experience of tennis growing up, became her primary coach, and her mother oversaw her home schooling. At ten she began training at a well known academy in France. She has since reached a career high of world number two in singles and number one in doubles, won twelve singles titles including the US Open in 2023 and the French Open in 2025, taken the season-ending finals in 2024, and won ten doubles titles including a French Open with a partner in 2024.
