The character arc of Sara Menker

A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record

Born in Ethiopia to middle class parents and educated at a private school in Addis Ababa. Between then and now sit degrees in the United States, a career begun in commodities risk management at Morgan Stanley, a move through the bank into portfolio trading and management, a decision in 2014 to leave Wall Street and use the same skills for something else, a company founded to forecast agricultural trends with artificial intelligence, a public warning that food shortages by 2030 could rival a financial crisis, a place in the hundred most influential people in the world in 2021, and a company that closed in May 2024. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Sara Menker?

She left the trading floor to forecast food. The company did not survive it.

Her parents were middle class and she went to a private school in Addis Ababa, then to college in the United States and on to a postgraduate degree. She began her career in commodities risk management at Morgan Stanley and moved through the bank into portfolio trading and management, which is a serious job that pays seriously.

In 2014 she left it. The stated reason is precise and worth reading: she wanted to use her skills in data analytics for social good. What she built was a company that used artificial intelligence to forecast agricultural trends, taking in things like the cost of avocado exports and the price of coffee beans, and predicting where food prices were going.

The question underneath it was bigger than a business. She had become concerned about a global food crisis and started investigating how Africa could meet the world's growing demand for food. Her estimate was that by 2030 food shortages could be as significant an event as the 2008 financial crisis or the dot-com crash, because of systemic problems in the supply chain and a rising population.

The company's work was used to study the effect of droughts and other disasters on food supply, and its reports told companies what to sell and where, and helped policymakers and insurers. She presented at a major foundation, at a research lab and at a newspaper. She was made a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2014, is a trustee of an agricultural research centre and a development institute, and was named one of the hundred most influential people in the world in 2021.

In February 2024 she was replaced as chief executive of the company she had founded. In May 2024 the company announced it was closing down. That is where the record leaves it, and it belongs on the line as much as the Time list does.

The moments

Sara Menker's timeline.

The 1990s

~1995

A private school in Addis Ababa

Everyday. Addis Ababa, and a schooling that made the rest possible.

The 2000s

~2005

Commodities risk at a bank

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Risk first, then trading, which is how you learn what moves.

The 2010s

1 Sep 2013

Stay on the desk, or leave

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: leave and build it, taken, or stay at the bank. She built the company and was named one of the hundred most influential people in the world in 2021. The company closed in May 2024.

~2014

She leaves Wall Street

Milestone, and it changed everything. The trading career, given up on purpose.

Jun 2014

A Young Global Leader

Milestone. Named in the same year she walked away from the bank.

~2016

A warning about 2030

Milestone, and it changed everything. A number and a date, put in public, about whether the world can eat.

~2018

Avocados, coffee and droughts

Milestone, and it changed her direction. A machine built to see a shortage before it arrives.

~2019

Trustee, and on the platforms

Milestone. Board seats at the institutions that actually grow things.

The 2020s

Sep 2021

One of the hundred most influential

Milestone, and it changed everything. Seven years after leaving the bank, on that list.

Feb 2024

She is replaced as chief executive

Setback, and it changed everything. Ten years after founding it, out of the top job.

May 2024

The company closes

Setback, and it changed everything. Three months later, the whole thing shut.

She left a trading career to answer a question about whether the world can feed itself, and the company she built to answer it no longer exists. What she set moving is the question, which is still there, and a line that is honest about the fact that leaving the safe job does not guarantee the other thing works.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

Hers has a company that closed at the end of it, which most success stories quietly leave off. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
