Who is Mira Murati?
She left the country alone at sixteen, and built what everyone uses.
She was born in Vlore in 1988, in an Albania that was about to come apart and rebuild itself. At sixteen she left on a Davis scholarship for Pearson College on Vancouver Island, a school on the other side of the world, and took her international baccalaureate there in 2007. She went on to a dual degree, mathematics at Colby and mechanical engineering at Dartmouth, finishing in 2012. Almost nothing about that path was available by default to a teenager from Vlore in 2005, and she took it alone.
She built physical things first. She worked in aerospace, then joined Tesla as a product manager on the Model X, then led product and engineering at Leap Motion, which was trying to make computers respond to hands. She joined OpenAI in 2018 when it was a research laboratory that almost nobody outside the field had heard of, and became its chief technology officer in May 2022. That November, ChatGPT was released. GPT-4 followed in March 2023. She was the executive responsible for shipping both.
In November 2023, when the board removed Sam Altman, she was named interim chief executive and held the post for three days before he returned. She left the company on 25 September 2024. In February 2025 she founded Thinking Machines Lab with colleagues from OpenAI, and that July it raised two billion dollars at a twelve billion dollar valuation, the largest seed round the field has seen. The first product, Tinker, arrived in October 2025 and a model called Inkling in July 2026. Her line is worth reading because the part that made her famous lasted three days, and the part that matters is the twenty years of engineering either side of it.
