Who is Annie Duke?

She finished the degree thirty years late.

She went to St Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, took a degree in English and psychology at Columbia, and began a doctorate in cognitive psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. She left it before finishing. In 1994 she entered her first World Series of Poker tournaments and won seventy thousand dollars in her first month.

The poker record is substantial. In 2000 she placed tenth in the World Series world championship while nine months pregnant. In 2004 she won a gold bracelet in Omaha hi-lo split, became the top female money winner in the game, and won the inaugural Tournament of Champions, beating nine former world champions and her own brother at the final table. In 2010 she won the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship, beating Erik Seidel. She retired from professional play in 2012.

Then she wrote. Thinking in Bets, published in 2018, argued that a good decision and a good outcome are different things, which is obvious at a poker table and almost never applied anywhere else. How to Decide followed in 2020 and Quit in 2022, the last of them about the underrated skill of walking away. In the autumn of 2022 she went back to Pennsylvania and completed the doctorate she had left, finishing in June 2023. In July 2025 she sat down in a tournament again.
