Who is Rangan Chatterjee?

He took the consultation into the house.

He went to Manchester Grammar School from 1988 to 1995 and to the University of Edinburgh Medical School, graduating in 2001 with a degree in medicine and immunology. He worked as a doctor from that year, and might have carried on unremarked for a whole career, as most doctors do.

What changed it was the television series Doctor in the House, in which he moved into a patient's home for weeks at a time rather than seeing them for ten minutes in a surgery. It is a simple reversal and it makes the point his books have made ever since: most of what decides a person's health happens outside the consulting room, in the ordinary hours nobody bills for.

He presented Holding Back the Years on BBC One in 2017 and has been a resident doctor on BBC Breakfast and a regular on BBC radio. The 4 Pillar Plan came in 2017, How to Make Disease Disappear and The Stress Solution in 2018, Feel Better in 5 in 2019, Feel Great Lose Weight in 2020, Happy Mind Happy Life in 2022 and Make Change That Lasts in 2025. His podcast, Feel Better Live More, is among the most listened to health podcasts in Europe. Seven books in eight years is an unusual rate for somebody who was seeing patients for most of it.

The moments

Rangan Chatterjee's timeline.

The 1980s

Sep 1988

Manchester Grammar School

Milestone. Seven years at one school, in the city he was born in.

The 2000s

Jun 2001

Edinburgh medicine

Milestone, and it changed everything. A medical degree, and a career that could have passed unremarked.

~2002

A working doctor

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Years of ordinary practice, which is what everything after this is built on.

The 2010s

1 Jun 2014

The surgery, or the camera

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: take it on television, taken, or stay in the surgery. Seven books and one of Europe's most listened to health podcasts came out of it.

Jun 2015

Doctor in the House

Milestone, and it changed everything. He moved into the patient's home instead of seeing them for ten minutes. That is the whole idea.

Jun 2017

Holding Back the Years

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A second series, and a national audience.

28 Dec 2017

The 4 Pillar Plan

Milestone, and it changed everything. A first book, and the argument set out in four parts.

Jun 2018

Two books in a year

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Two books in twelve months, while still seeing patients.

26 Dec 2019

Feel Better in 5

Milestone, and it changed everything. Five minutes a day, which is the smallest unit anybody has argued for.

The 2020s

6 Jan 2022

Happy Mind, Happy Life

Milestone, and it changed his direction. The same method turned towards the mind rather than the body.

Jun 2023

Feel Better, Live More

Milestone, and it changed everything. A podcast among the most listened to health shows in Europe.

2 Jan 2025

Make Change That Lasts

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A seventh book, and the one about why the other six are hard to follow.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is a simple reframing that reached millions: that most of what decides your health happens in the ordinary hours, not in the ten minutes with a doctor.
