Who is Ali Abdaal?
He finished the medical degree, and then walked away from it.
He was born in Karachi in 1994 and grew up in Lesotho, in southern Africa, before his mother, brother and grandmother brought him to England in 2003, when he was nine. By twelve he had taught himself to code and was earning money as a freelance web designer, which is the first sign of the pattern: learn something, then work out how to make it pay, then explain it to somebody else.
He read medicine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In 2017, while still a student, he started a YouTube channel to explain how he had got in and how he revised, which is a small and unglamorous subject with an enormous audience. He qualified as a doctor in 2018 and spent two years as a junior doctor at Addenbrooke's Hospital, doing both jobs at once, the channel growing alongside the shifts.
In 2020 he left clinical medicine. That is a harder decision than it sounds: six years of training, a profession his family had backed, a guaranteed career, given up for a channel. He moved from study tips into productivity more broadly, built courses and a business around it, and published Feel-Good Productivity in December 2023, which became a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller and has sold more than a quarter of a million copies. His channel was recorded at more than six and a half million subscribers in July 2026. His line is worth reading because the qualification is real and he chose not to use it.
