The character arc of Lewis Hamilton

Born 7 January 1985 in Stevenage and raised on a council estate. Between then and now sit a first go-kart bought on money his father earned from several jobs at once, a boyhood word with a McLaren team boss that came true, a debut season that missed the title by a single point, a first world championship won at the last corner, six more titles with Mercedes, a finale in 2021 that got away, and a move to Ferrari for a new chapter. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Lewis Hamilton?

The council-estate boy who became the most successful ever.

He was born in Stevenage in 1985 and grew up on a council estate, and the sport that carried him is one of the most expensive there is. It was made possible by his father, Anthony, who at times held down several jobs at once, fitting signs, working the railways and more, to pay for the karts, the tyres and the miles up and down the country every weekend. Lewis paid him back on the track: British karting champion as a boy, and already the fastest thing on any grid he joined.

At the 1995 Autosport Awards, aged ten, he walked up to Ron Dennis, the boss of McLaren, and told him he wanted to race his cars one day. Three years later McLaren signed him to their young driver programme, the youngest ever taken on that way, and set him on the ladder through Formula Renault, Formula Three and GP2. In 2007 he arrived in Formula One with McLaren, stood on the podium on his debut, and lost the world championship by a single point in his first season. He answered it the very next year, taking the 2008 title at the last corner of the last race.

In 2013 he left McLaren for a Mercedes team that had won nothing, a move most thought was a mistake. It became the most dominant partnership the sport had seen: six more world championships, a seventh crown in 2020 that equalled the all-time record, and more race wins than any driver in history. The line does not run only upward. In 2021 the title got away on the last lap of the last race, a night he has spoken of as one of the hardest. In 2025 he began again in Ferrari red. His line is worth reading because it started on a council estate, and it is still being drawn.
