Who is Poppy Gustafsson?
The accountant who built the defences.
She was born Poppy Prentis in Huntingdon, went to Hinchingbrooke School, and took a BSc in mathematics at the University of Sheffield in 2003. Then she did the least glamorous thing available and qualified as a chartered accountant at Deloitte in 2006. Nothing about that route suggests the rest of this line.
She worked at the venture capital firm Amadeus Capital Partners, then joined Autonomy in 2009 as corporate controller until Hewlett-Packard bought it. In 2013 she co-founded Darktrace, a cyber defence company, as its chief financial officer. She became co-chief executive in 2016 and sole chief executive in 2020, and in 2021 she led its flotation in London, which at the time was one of the few large technology listings the London market had managed to keep.
She left the company in 2024 ahead of its sale to Thoma Bravo. On 10 October 2024 she was appointed Minister of State for Investment, and on 15 November 2024 she was created a life peer as Baroness Gustafsson. She resigned the ministerial post on 5 September 2025. She was appointed OBE in 2019 and CBE in the 2025 New Year Honours, and Sheffield gave her an honorary doctorate in 2022. She married Roland Gustafsson in 2008 and they have two daughters. Her line is worth reading because the finance qualification is not a detour on it, it is the thing that made the rest possible.
