Who is Zhang Xin?
She saved five years of factory wages for one ticket out.
She was born in Beijing in 1965, into the China of the Cultural Revolution, and moved to Hong Kong at fourteen. What followed is the part of her life that explains the rest: five years working on factory production lines, from fourteen to nineteen, in the garment and electronics plants that Hong Kong ran on then. She saved what she earned. At nineteen she had enough for a ticket to England and went, on her own, with no family there and no arrangement waiting.
She took a degree in economics at the University of Sussex and then a master's in development economics at Cambridge, and went into investment banking, working for Goldman Sachs and Travelers Group. By her late twenties she had made the whole crossing: from a production line to Wall Street, in about a decade. Then she gave it up. In 1994 she returned to China, met Pan Shiyi, and married him within weeks.
They founded SOHO China in 1995 and spent the next twenty seven years building. The company put up much of the commercial architecture that now defines central Beijing, commissioning serious architects rather than the cheapest bidder, and a project called Commune by the Great Wall took a prize at the Venice Biennale in 2002. In October 2007 SOHO China listed in Hong Kong, raising 1.9 billion dollars, the largest commercial real estate listing Asia had seen. An agreed sale to Blackstone did not complete in 2021, and she resigned from the company in September 2022, ahead of the downturn that followed in Chinese property. She has since built again in the United States. Her line is worth reading because the girl on the production line is the one who did all of it.
