Who is Cher Wang?
The empire was there to inherit, and she started from nothing twice.
She was born in Taipei in 1958, the daughter of Wang Yung-ching, who built Formosa Plastics into one of the largest industrial groups in Asia. The expected path was obvious and enormous. She did not take it. She went to school in California, took a degree in economics at Berkeley in 1981, and then built companies of her own, which in the context of her family was the harder and stranger choice.
The first was VIA Technologies in 1987, making chipsets, a business that sits several layers below anything a consumer sees. The second was HTC in 1997, which began by manufacturing devices for other companies to put their names on. Then in 2008 HTC built the first commercially available Android phone, which put it, briefly, at the centre of the most important product category of the decade. By May 2011 she and her husband were ranked the wealthiest people in Taiwan.
The fall was fast. Apple and Samsung took the market, HTC's share collapsed, and in March 2015 she took over as chief executive herself rather than hand the problem to somebody else. She moved the company into virtual reality, launching the Vive in 2016, and in 2017 agreed a 1.1 billion dollar arrangement under which Google took a large part of the phone engineering team and licensed intellectual property. The company is much smaller than it was and it is still hers. France made her a Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2025. Her line is worth reading because the peak lasted about three years and she is still there after the fall.

The paths laid out: take the chief executive job, taken, or appoint somebody else. She launched the Vive in 2016, agreed the Google arrangement in 2017, and the company survived in a different business from the one it had been in.
