Who is Oleksandr Usyk?
Folk dancing until fifteen, and then the gloves.
He was born in Simferopol to parents originally from northern Ukraine: his mother from the Chernihiv region, who had moved south to study and worked in construction, and his father from Sumy, a former soldier who worked as a security guard. He is the eldest of three. What he did as a boy was not boxing. He practised folk dancing, particularly the hopak, and played association football until he was fifteen, training at a specialist sports school attached to a local club's academy.
In his second year of school he had pneumonia that nearly killed him, an illness that lasted the best part of a year and included two months in hospital. He recovered. In 2002, at fifteen, he switched to boxing, which is late: most professionals have been in a gym since they were eight. He later graduated from a state university of physical culture.
The amateur record moves quickly from there. He won his first three fights at the European Championships in 2006 before losing in the semi-final, moved up a weight and won a cup in 2008, and in February 2008 was moved up another weight class and sent to an Olympic qualifier as a replacement for the European champion, where he beat two experienced international opponents. He went to the Games that year and has since become an Olympic champion and an undisputed world champion at two different weights, having started the sport later than almost anybody at that level.
The moments
Oleksandr Usyk's timeline.
The 1980s
Born in Simferopol
Everyday. A construction worker and a security guard, and three children.
The 1990s
Hopak, and football
Milestone, and it changed everything. Folk dancing and football, which between them make the feet.
A year of pneumonia
Setback, and it changed everything. Two months in a hospital bed, and nearly a year ill, as a small boy.
The 2000s
Football, or the gym
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: take up boxing, taken, or stay with football. He was at the Olympic Games within six years and an Olympic champion within ten.
He switches at fifteen
Milestone, and it changed everything. Fifteen years old, which in boxing is a very late start.
A degree in physical culture
Milestone. He took the degree as well as the training.
Out in the semi-final
Setback, and it changed his direction. Three wins, and then out one fight from the final.
A cup at a new weight
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Up a weight, and he won the first thing he entered.
A late call to the qualifier
Milestone, and it changed everything. A last minute replacement at a new weight, and he beat two international names.
His first Olympics
Milestone, and it changed everything. Six years after he first put a glove on, he was at the Olympics.
The 2010s
Olympic champion
Milestone, and it changed everything. Ten years after taking up the sport, the Olympic title.
Undisputed, twice over
Milestone, and it changed everything. Every belt at one weight, and then every belt at a heavier one.
The footwork in the ring is the footwork from the dancing, and anybody who watches him can see it. What it has set moving is a correction to a rule everybody in the sport repeats: you have to start at eight, and the man with the best feet in boxing was doing the hopak until he was fifteen.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
His did not throw a punch in a gym until fifteen, which in that sport is very late indeed. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
