Who is Carlos Alcaraz?
Nineteen years and a hundred days, and number one in the world.
He comes from the Region of Murcia, in the south east of Spain, and he arrived on the professional tour as what the record calls a teen phenomenon. In 2020 he won the tour's finals for players under twenty one and was named newcomer of the year, at seventeen. That is the point at which a career either accelerates or stalls, and his accelerated.
In 2022 he won his first major title at the US Open and became the youngest man in the Open Era to be ranked world number one, at nineteen years and a hundred and thirty days, and finished the year as the youngest year-end number one in the history of the rankings. In 2023 he won Wimbledon, beating a seven-time champion of that tournament in a final the record describes as epic, which is a rare word for an encyclopaedia to use.
In 2024 he won his first French Open and defended Wimbledon, becoming the youngest man to take both in the same season. He has been ranked world number one for sixty six weeks, finished as year-end number one in 2022 and 2025, and has won twenty six tour titles, including seven majors and eight of the tour's biggest events below that level. He is the ninth man in history to complete the career grand slam in singles, and the youngest of the nine.

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Two year-end number ones, three years apart.
Murcia is where he learned it and Spain has produced another one, which is not an accident.
