Who is Tony Jaa?
He taught himself, then taught the world.
He grew up in Surin, in the northeast of Thailand, in a family of the Kuy people who kept and worked elephants, and money was scarce. As a boy he watched Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li on temple-fair screens and copied every move in his father's rice paddy, and he trained in Muay Thai. The film maker Panna Rittikrai found him there, and for some fourteen years Jaa took falls and hits for a stunt team, mostly with no name on the screen.
Then came Ong-Bak in 2003. He fought as Ting with no wires and no doubles, and audiences abroad had not seen a body move like that, so the world took notice. Tom Yum Goong followed, with a climb up a restaurant in one unbroken shot. But when he set out to direct his own film, Ong Bak 2, the weight of it overwhelmed him, and during a troubled production he left the set for about two months. He finished the film, handed the chair back to Panna, and in May 2010 rode an elephant to a temple in Surin, shaved his head and took the vows of a Buddhist monk, a season of renewal that is common in Thai life.
He left the robes, settled a long contract dispute, and came back to the screen in Tom Yum Goong 2. Furious 7 then placed him in a Hollywood cast, and more international films followed. In early 2026 reports confirmed he had come through treatment for cancer, a fight he met away from the cameras, and by mid year he was cast again, in a new Muay Thai trilogy and a reunion of Thai action stars.
