Who is Nadia Nadim?

She was born in Herat in 1988. Her father was a general in the Afghan National Army and was executed by the Taliban when she was nine. At eleven she, her mother and her four sisters left Afghanistan and arrived in Denmark as refugees. She joined a local football club in Aalborg shortly afterwards, which is a very ordinary thing to do and the reason everything else on this line exists.

She turned professional and has played for eight clubs across five countries: IK Skovbakken from 2006, Fortuna Hjorring from 2012, Sky Blue in New Jersey from 2014, Portland Thorns from 2016, with whom she won the NWSL Championship in 2017, Manchester City in 2018, Paris Saint-Germain from 2019, with whom she won the French league in 2021, Racing Louisville from 2021, AC Milan from 2024 and HB Koge from 2025. She played for Denmark until after the 2025 European Championship.

Alongside all of it she was studying medicine at Aarhus University, and qualified as a doctor in January 2022, while playing professionally in another country. That is the fact that makes this line unusual even among professional athletes: most of them have one career at a time. Her memoir was published in Denmark in 2018.
