Who is Michael Phelps?

The hard part came after the medals.

He was born in Baltimore in 1985. At the 2004 Athens Olympics he won six gold medals and two bronze. At Beijing in 2008 he won eight golds at a single games, which nobody had done. He started the Michael Phelps Foundation after those games, to grow swimming and promote healthier lives.

At London in 2012 he won four golds and two silvers, and retired. In April 2014 he came back, which is a harder decision than it sounds: he had nothing left to prove and everything to lose. At Rio de Janeiro in 2016, at thirty one, he won five more golds and a silver, and retired for good on 12 August 2016. The total is twenty eight Olympic medals, twenty three of them gold, which is more than any other athlete in the history of the games.

What he is now known for, as much as the swimming, is what he has said since. He has spoken openly and repeatedly about his own mental health, including in the period after the biggest wins of his life, and about how little anybody prepares an athlete for the years afterwards.
