He was born in Abidjan in 1978 and at five his parents sent him to France to live with his uncle Michel Goba, a professional footballer. He went home after three years because he was homesick, and was sent back again when his parents lost their jobs. In 1991 the family moved to France for good, settling at Antony in 1993. That is a childhood spent being moved between two countries by circumstances nobody consulted him about.

He did not make his professional debut until he was twenty one, at Le Mans in 1998, which in football terms is late enough that most scouts have stopped looking. Then it happened quickly: Guingamp in 2002, seventeen goals in thirty four games. Marseille in 2003, nineteen league goals and Ligue 1 Player of the Year. Chelsea in 2004, for twenty four million pounds, where he scored over a hundred Premier League goals.

The 2012 Champions League final is where the line peaks. Chelsea were losing to Bayern Munich in Munich. He scored the equaliser, and then took and scored the winning penalty. Afterwards came Shanghai Shenhua, Galatasaray and a Turkish Super Cup, a hat trick on his debut for Montreal Impact, and Phoenix Rising, where he became a minority owner and then retired in November 2018 at forty. For Ivory Coast he won 105 caps and scored 65 goals, captaining the side from 2006 through three World Cups and two Africa Cup of Nations finals, both lost on penalties.
