Who is Mira Rai?

She turned up for a run, and won a fifty kilometre race.

She comes from a remote village in Bhojpur, in the east of Nepal, where her family farmed and struggled to meet everyday needs. She left school at twelve, partly to help with the household and partly because the family could not afford the fees, and she spent those years walking up and down mountain terrain to collect water and to reach the market. At fourteen she left home in the middle of the night, without telling her parents, to join the Maoist insurgency when recruiters came through the village. When the civil war ended she was still a minor, so she was not eligible to join the army and was discharged.

She went home, and then she went to Kathmandu, to do karate and to run. The story of how the running started is close to unbelievable and is in the record. Out on the hills around the city one morning she met a group training on the same trails. They ran together, and they asked her to come back the following week. When she arrived, it turned out to be the start line of a fifty kilometre race. She had no proper food, no water and no technical kit. She ran it anyway and won.

With a coach she began travelling to international ultra-trail races and winning them, one after another, breaking records as she went. In early 2016 a knee injury in the United Kingdom took her out of international competition for a time. What she did with that time is the part that matters most: she turned to building the sport at home, organising trail races in Kathmandu and in her own district of Bhojpur, and training young women from rural Nepal to compete abroad. In 2017 she was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. She has never won a world title, and it is not what she is for.
