The character arc of Sky Brown

A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record

Born on 7 July 2008 in Miyazaki, Japan, to a Japanese mother and a British father. Between then and now sit a family of skateboarders and a ramp in the garden, a first professional event at eight, professional status at ten as the youngest in the world, a choice to compete for Great Britain in March 2019, a fall in May 2020 that fractured her skull, an Olympic bronze in 2021 at thirteen as her country's youngest ever medallist, a second bronze in 2024 and world titles in 2023 and 2025. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Sky Brown?

Skull fractured in May, and an Olympic medal after.

She was born in Miyazaki to a Japanese mother and a British father, into a family of skateboarders. Her preschool had a skate park, and because there are none in her part of Miyazaki she has a ramp in the back garden. She has never had a skateboarding coach: she learns tricks from online video, and sometimes practises alongside an Olympic snowboarder. She surfs as well.

She entered the Vans US Open in 2016, at eight, the youngest person ever to compete there, and fell off in her heat. She came second in a continental final the following year and finished in the top ten of a world series the year after. In 2018, at ten, she turned professional, the youngest professional skateboarder in the world, and won an American television dance competition for children the same year. In March 2019 she chose to compete for Great Britain rather than Japan, and that year she took third at the world championships and became the first female skater to land a frontside 540 at the X Games.

On 28 May 2020, training in California, she fell from a halfpipe ramp and fractured her skull in several places, breaking her left wrist and hand. She was flown to hospital and reported as unresponsive when she arrived. Her father said afterwards that she was lucky to be alive. She won X Games gold in July 2021, and in August she took bronze in the park event at the Olympics, at thirteen years and twenty eight days, the youngest medallist her country has ever had. She won the world title in 2023, a second Olympic bronze in 2024, and the world title again in 2025.

Sky Brown's timeline.

The 2000s

The 2010s

~2012

A ramp in the garden

~2016

She falls at eight

Setback, and it changed her direction. The youngest person ever to enter it, and she fell off.

28 May 2020

A fall in California

1 Jun 2020

Get back on the ramp

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: go back to it, taken, or stop, or surf instead. She won X Games gold in July 2021 and Olympic bronze the following month.

Jul 2021

X Games gold

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Fourteen months after the fall, back on top of a ramp.

4 Aug 2021

Olympic bronze at thirteen

Milestone, and it changed everything. She fell on both of her first two runs, and landed the third.

~2023

World champion

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Twice a world champion, and still a teenager.

Aug 2024

A second Olympic bronze

Milestone, and it changed everything. Two Games, two medals, and she was sixteen.

The garden ramp in Miyazaki is still where a lot of it gets learned, from videos, with no coach. What it has set moving is visible at every skate park in Britain on a Saturday: a sport that used to be something boys did in car parks now has a queue of girls waiting for the bowl.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

Hers went from a hospital bed to an Olympic podium in a little over a year. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
