Who is Cathie Wood?

They said it was too risky.

She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Los Angeles, an all-girls Catholic high school, in 1974. In 1977, through her mentor Arthur Laffer, she took a job as an assistant economist at Capital Group and worked there for three years. In 1980 she moved to New York City to join Jennison Associates as chief economist, analyst, portfolio manager and managing director, and in 1981 she graduated summa cum laude from the University of Southern California with a degree in finance and economics. She joined AllianceBernstein in 2001 as chief investment officer of global thematic strategies, where she worked for twelve years managing five billion dollars, and was criticised for performing worse than the market during the 2008 financial crisis.

In 2014 her idea for actively managed exchange-traded funds built on disruptive innovation was judged too risky by AllianceBernstein. She left and founded ARK Invest, at fifty eight, having spent her whole career inside other people's firms.

What followed is unusually public in both directions. In 2020 her flagship ARK Innovation fund was the top performing global equity fund with at least a billion dollars of assets, and she was named the best stock picker of that year. In 2021 the same fund fell twenty four percent, and in the first quarter of 2022 it was the worst performer among the equity funds Morningstar covered. For the ten years to 31 December 2023 Morningstar ranked ARK Invest the worst wealth destroyer family of funds by decline in assets, while the fund itself returned 122 percent over that period against the Nasdaq-100's 330 percent. In 2023 it was the top performing actively traded fund of its kind, the funds rebounded through 2025, and in January 2026 Morningstar ranked it the fifth best performing fund of 2025 with ARK taking four of the top five places. She was selected for the inaugural Forbes 50 Over 50 in 2021, and in 2018 she gave funds to her old high school to start an institute encouraging girls to study innovation.

The 1970s

Jun 1974

Notre Dame Academy

Milestone. An all-girls Catholic school in Los Angeles.

Jun 1977

A job through a mentor

Milestone, and it changed everything. An assistant economist, found through somebody who knew her.

The 1980s

Jun 1980

New York, and Jennison

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Four job titles at once, at twenty five.

Jun 1981

Summa cum laude

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Top of her class, with the job already started.

The 2000s

Jun 2001

Twelve years, five billion

Milestone, and it changed everything. Five billion dollars, and twelve years of running it.

The 2010s

1 Jun 2013

Accept the answer, or leave

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: leave and run it herself, taken, or stay and drop the idea. ARK Innovation was the top performing global equity fund of its size in 2020, fell twenty four percent in 2021, and ARK funds took four of the top five places in 2025.

Jun 2014

She left and founded ARK

Milestone, and it changed everything. The idea was refused, so she left and built it.

The 2020s

31 Dec 2020

The best year

Milestone, and it changed everything. The top performing fund of its kind in the world, that year.

Jun 2021

Fifty over fifty

Milestone. A list for people who started late, which she had.

31 Dec 2021

A fall of twenty four percent

Setback, and it changed everything. The same fund, down a quarter, the year after the best one.

31 Dec 2023

Both sides of one decade

Milestone, and it changed everything. The worst ranking and the best year of its kind, in the same decade.

31 Dec 2025

The rebound

Milestone, and it changed her direction. Four of the top five places, two years after the worst ranking.

The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is a line with real peaks and real troughs, drawn honestly: the best year and the worst quarter belong to the same fund and the same person.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

Hers left a twelve year job at fifty eight to run the idea nobody would let her run. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
