The character arc of Marcus Rashford

A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record

Born on 31 October 1997 in Manchester, to a mother of Kittitian descent and a father from Jamaica, the youngest of five in a working class family. Between then and now sit a mother who worked multiple jobs and sometimes skipped meals so her children had enough to eat, a first club at five where he played in goal, the Manchester United academy at seven, the youngest player ever picked for a scholars scheme at eleven, first team training at sixteen, two goals on his first team debut in February 2016, a goal on his England debut that May, a European Championship final, years of campaigning on hunger and homelessness, a loan away from the club at twenty seven, and a Spanish league title. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Marcus Rashford?

His mother went without food. He has never stopped talking about it.

His father is from Jamaica and his mother of Kittitian descent, with his grandmother born on Saint Kitts. He is the youngest of five, from a working class family in Manchester, and the fact that sits under everything else on this page is that his mother, Melanie, was a single parent who worked multiple jobs and sometimes skipped meals to make sure her children had enough to eat. Two of his older brothers went on to represent him professionally.

He began playing at five, for a local junior club, and started out as a goalkeeper. He spent a week training with Manchester City before joining the Manchester United academy at seven, with Everton and Liverpool also interested, and has credited his brothers with helping him decide. At eleven he became the youngest player ever selected for the club's schoolboy scholars scheme, which was normally for twelve and above. At sixteen he trained with the first team for the first time, and called the session priceless.

In February 2016, at eighteen, he scored twice on both his first team and European debut, and then made his Premier League debut three days later. He scored in his first Manchester derby, and on his League Cup and Champions League debuts too. In May he scored on his England debut, which made him the youngest English player ever to score in a first senior international. He was the youngest player at that summer's European Championship, and appeared in the final of the next one.

The campaigning is not a sideline and it is not abstract. He works on child hunger, homelessness and racism in the United Kingdom, and the child hunger part comes directly from a house where his mother went without so that he did not. He has been recognised for it by organisations inside and outside sport, and a mural of him was painted in the part of Manchester he grew up in.

The football has two FA Cups, two League Cups, a Community Shield and a Europa League in it. It also has 2025, when he was loaned out by the club he had joined at seven, first to Aston Villa and then to Barcelona, where he won a Spanish league title. He has been to three World Cups.
