He was born in Le Chesnay, west of Paris, in 2004, into a family of athletes, and kept growing past every court he stood on. He learned the game in French youth basketball and turned professional as a teenager, first with Nanterre 92, and by his final season in France, with Metropolitans 92, the whole basketball world was watching a player who stood well over seven feet yet moved, passed and shot like someone far smaller. LeBron James, asked about him, said he looked like an alien, and the name stuck.
In June 2023 the San Antonio Spurs selected him first overall in the NBA draft, and he arrived carrying a weight of expectation that would have flattened most. He met it. In his first season he blocked shots at a league-leading rate, put up numbers rare for a rookie, and was named Rookie of the Year in 2024. The line was climbing about as steeply as a young career can.
