Who is Malcolm Gladwell?
He went back and argued with himself.
He was born in Hampshire and grew up in Elmira, Ontario. He interned at the National Journalism Center in Washington in 1982 and took a degree in history at Trinity College, University of Toronto in 1984. He was a staff writer at The Washington Post from 1987 to 1996, which is nine years of ordinary newspaper reporting, and it is the part of the line that explains the rest.
He joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in 1996 and has stayed for three decades. The Tipping Point came in 2000, Blink in 2005 and Outliers in 2008. Between them they put a set of ideas into common speech: the tipping point itself, thin slicing, the ten thousand hours. He was named on the Time 100 in 2005, given the American Sociological Association's award for excellence in reporting in 2007 and appointed to the Order of Canada in 2011.
The later work is where the line gets interesting. What the Dog Saw came in 2009, David and Goliath in 2013, Talking to Strangers in 2019 and The Bomber Mafia in 2021. He started the podcast Revisionist History in 2016 and co-founded the audio company Pushkin Industries in 2018, winning an Audio Vanguard Award in 2024. In the same year he published Revenge of the Tipping Point, which returns to his own first book and revises it. Going back in public to argue with a book that sold millions is a rarer thing than writing it.
