The character arc of Rory Sutherland
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born on 12 November 1965 in Llanbadoc, near Usk in Monmouthshire. Between then and now sit Monmouth School, classics at Christ's College, Cambridge from 1984, a graduate traineeship at Ogilvy in 1988, a creative directorship in 2001, the presidency of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising from 2008, a behavioural science practice founded in 2012 and Alchemy in 2019. Who is Rory Sutherland?
He was moved sideways and found the job.
He was born in a Welsh village near Usk, went to Monmouth School, and read classics at Christ's College, Cambridge from 1984. In 1988 he joined Ogilvy as a graduate trainee planner. He has never worked anywhere else, which in a trade that measures status by how often you move is the first unusual thing about him.
The second is that the traineeship did not go well. He had a brief spell in account management and was moved into copywriting, which is the job he turned out to be built for. He became a creative director in 2001. From 2008 to 2012 he was president of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, the trade's own body.
In 2012 he founded a behavioural science practice inside the Ogilvy Group, on the argument that most of what advertising does is psychology that nobody had bothered to name. He is now president emeritus of Ogilvy Consulting. The Wiki Man came in 2011, Alchemy in 2019 and Transport for Humans in 2021 with Pete Dyson. He writes a fortnightly column in The Spectator and, at sixty, has an unlikely following on TikTok. The argument he makes everywhere is the same one: the logical answer and the effective answer are frequently not the same answer, and the second one is the one worth having.
The moments
Rory Sutherland's timeline.
The 1980s
Classics at Cambridge
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Greek and Latin, which is not the obvious training for an advertising career.
A graduate trainee
Milestone, and it changed everything. One firm, joined at twenty two, and never left.
The 1990s
Leave the firm, or move inside it
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: move to copywriting, taken, or start again elsewhere. He is still at the same firm nearly four decades later, as president emeritus of its consulting arm.
Moved into copywriting
Setback, and it changed everything. The job he was hired for did not suit him. The one he was moved into did.
The 2000s
Creative director
Milestone, and it changed everything. Thirteen years after the traineeship that went badly.
President of the IPA
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Four years running the trade's own body.
The 2010s
The Wiki Man
Milestone. The first book, collected from columns.
A behavioural practice
Milestone, and it changed everything. Most of what advertising does is psychology nobody had bothered to name. So he named it.
Alchemy
Milestone, and it changed everything. The logical answer and the effective answer are often different. That is the whole book.
The 2020s
Transport for Humans
Milestone. The same argument, applied to why people choose the slower train.
The Spectator, and TikTok
Milestone. A fortnightly column in print, and a following on an app built for people a third his age.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is a simple and awkward idea: the logical answer and the effective answer are often different, and most people stop looking after they find the first one.

Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
His started badly in the job he was hired for and was moved sideways into the right one. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
