She was born in Herat in 1996 and grew up under Taliban rule. When she was ten her family first considered selling her as a bride. Years later, at sixteen, her mother called her back to Afghanistan to marry a man in exchange for a dowry of nine thousand dollars. That is the situation, stated plainly, and it was not unusual where she was.
What she did with it was. Instead of complying she made a rap video protesting forced marriage, with the documentary filmmaker Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami, who paid her mother two thousand dollars to buy six months in which the project could be made. A sixteen year old girl being sold, buying time with somebody else's money, to record a song about being sold.
The video reached an international audience. The Strongheart Group sponsored her move to the United States. A documentary about her, Sonita, premiered in 2015 and won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance in 2016. She took her high school diploma at Wasatch Academy, was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 2022, and graduated from Bard College in 2023. She continues to perform and campaign. Her line is worth reading because the thing that was meant to end it is the thing she made her name with.
