Who is IU?

She was born in Seoul and showed an interest in performing early, taking acting classes as a child. After her primary school years the family's finances collapsed and they moved out of the city. She and her younger brother lived apart from their parents for over a year, in a studio room with their grandmother and a cousin, in what the record calls great poverty. She had little contact with her parents in that period and has said she was reassured by her grandmother's care.
She went to twenty auditions and failed all of them, and was scammed by fake entertainment companies along the way. She trained at one agency, signed with another in 2007, and moved back into Seoul. She has said she loved being at the studio, because she could eat as much as she wanted and had somewhere to sleep. After ten months of training she debuted at fifteen, in September 2008. She has recalled that the crowd hurled insults at her during that first live performance. The album did not sell. She said later that she is grateful it failed, because success straight away would have cost her the appreciation she has now.
Then Good Day, the lead single from a 2010 release, spent five consecutive weeks at the top of the national chart and made her a household name. A decade later it was ranked the greatest Korean-pop song of the 2010s. She took more and more control of her own records as writer and producer, moved away from the mainstream sound, and stayed at the top of the charts anyway. She has thirty one number-one singles, the most of any artist in South Korea, five studio albums and twelve extended plays, and became the first solo female artist in her industry to fill two of the largest venues in Seoul. She has also built a serious acting career, with acclaimed roles in 2018 and 2025, and was ranked number one on a national celebrity list in 2025.
