Who is Hania Rani?

She was born in Gdansk to a doctor and an architect, and took the full classical route: a music school in her own city, then the Chopin university in Warsaw, then a conservatoire in Berlin. That is a training in playing other people's music correctly. While she was still at music school she began working jazz into it, which is not what that training is for.
In 2015 she made an album with the cellist Dobrawa Czocher, arranging the music of a Polish songwriter. Then the pandemic closed the concert halls, and what she did with the silence is the turn on this line: she started improvising, and composing her own music. She has spent the years since ignoring the lines between jazz, classical and electronic music, which is a thing a conservatoire graduate is not supposed to do.
The recognition has come quickly. A national cultural prize in the popular music category in 2023. A commission from a British broadcaster in 2024 for the opening of its football coverage, which is a long way from a conservatoire. A first piano concerto, written partly in response to the discovery in 2020 of music composed by a young prodigy in the Warsaw Ghetto, recorded at Abbey Road and released by Decca. Seven national music awards by 2025. In 2026 she won the European Film Award for best composer for a film score, and in June that year she gave the Polish premiere of a new piece in Warsaw and was given a national medal for services to culture the same night.
