The character arc of Eliud Kipchoge
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born 5 November 1984 in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya, raised by his mother after losing his father young. Between then and now sit a world 5000 metres title at eighteen, a failure to make the Kenyan Olympic team in 2012, a move to the marathon in 2013, two Olympic marathon titles, two world records in Berlin, and a run in Vienna in 2019 that took the distance under two hours for the first time. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Eliud Kipchoge?
His country would not pick him, so he changed the distance.
He was born in 1984 in Kapsisiywa, in the Nandi hills of Kenya, and was raised by his mother, a teacher, having lost his father when he was very young. Like a great many runners from that part of the country he covered the distance to school on foot, and in his teens he sold milk from a bicycle. He met the coach Patrick Sang in 2001 and has worked with him ever since. In 2003, at eighteen, he won the world 5000 metres title in Paris, beating Hicham El Guerrouj and Kenenisa Bekele in the same race.
Then the track career flattened out. Olympic bronze in 2004 and silver in 2008 were very good and not gold, and in 2012 he failed to make the Kenyan team for the London Olympics at all. Kenya has more good distance runners than places, and at twenty seven he was surplus to it. So he changed event. He ran his first marathon in Hamburg in April 2013 and won it, and from that point he barely lost for a decade.
He won in Berlin in 2015 with the insoles of his shoes working loose and flapping for most of the race. He won the Olympic marathon in Rio in 2016 and again in Tokyo in 2021, the only man to defend it in sixty years. He missed two hours by twenty five seconds at Monza in 2017 and then, on 12 October 2019 in Vienna, ran 1:59:40 in a paced exhibition, the first human to cover the distance inside two hours, though the conditions meant it was not a record. He set the actual world record in Berlin in 2018 and broke it again in 2022. The end was harder: sixth at Boston in 2023 and a first failure to finish, in Paris in 2024. His line is worth reading because the best of it starts with not being selected.
The moments
Eliud Kipchoge's timeline.
The 1990s
The run to school
Everyday, and it changed everything. The ordinary childhood of a Kenyan distance runner, which is to say miles a day before anyone was timing them.
The 2000s
World champion at eighteen
Milestone, and it changed everything. He beat the two best distance runners in the world in the same race, at eighteen years old.
Olympic bronze in Athens
Milestone. A medal at nineteen, and the beginning of a decade of very good without gold.
Olympic silver in Beijing
Milestone. Second again, four years on, in a country that has more good distance runners than it can select.
The 2010s
He did not qualify
Setback, and it changed everything. At twenty seven, a former world champion could not make his own country's team. That is where the career looked finished.
Fight for a track place, or move up
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: move to the marathon, taken, or keep fighting for the 5000. He won his first marathon in Hamburg in 2013, took Olympic titles in 2016 and 2021, set world records in Berlin in 2018 and 2022, and went under two hours in Vienna in 2019.
His first marathon, won
Milestone, and it changed everything. Rather than fight for a track place he could not win, he changed the distance entirely, and won first time.
Berlin, with the insoles out
Milestone, and it changed his direction. The insoles flapped out of both shoes for most of the distance. He won anyway, and did not stop to fix them.
Olympic marathon champion
Milestone, and it changed everything. Four years after not being picked for the Olympics, he won the hardest event at them.
Twenty five seconds short
Setback, and it changed everything. The first serious attempt at two hours, and it failed by less than half a minute.
The world record in Berlin
Milestone, and it changed everything. The biggest single improvement to the marathon record in more than fifty years.
Under two hours
Milestone, and it changed everything. A barrier physiologists had argued about for decades, gone, in a race that deliberately did not count.
The 2020s
Olympic champion again
Milestone, and it changed everything. The first man in sixty years to defend the Olympic marathon title.
He broke his own record
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Thirty seconds taken off his own mark, at thirty seven years old.
Sixth in Boston
Setback, and it changed everything. The first race in a decade in which he was not at the front, and the beginning of the end of the run.
He stopped in Paris
Setback, and it changed everything. The first time he had failed to finish a marathon, in his last Olympic Games.
His last elite marathon
Milestone, and it changed everything. Twelve years and the greatest marathon career there has been, finished on his own terms.
Cape Town, the first stop
Milestone, and it changed everything. No longer racing for a time. Running a marathon on every continent, raising money for his foundation.
He is running marathons in his forties yet, and is still the calmest man on the road. What it has set moving is a sentence he repeats rather than a time on a clock: that no human is limited, said by a man who was told he was not fast enough to be picked.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
His turns on the year his own country left him off the team. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
