The character arc of Arvydas Sabonis
Born 19 December 1964 in Kaunas, Lithuania. Between then and now sit a rise with Zalgiris Kaunas, Olympic gold with the Soviet Union in Seoul, a ruptured Achilles tendon that nearly ended everything, two Olympic bronze medals won for a newly independent Lithuania, a long-delayed NBA arrival with Portland at thirty, and a place among the greatest centers ever to play. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Arvydas Sabonis?
The giant from Kaunas, a nation on his shoulders.
He was born in Kaunas in 1964 and grew tall early, a boy already over two metres who joined Zalgiris Kaunas as a teenager and turned the club into a power. By his early twenties he was seen as the most complete big man in the world: seven feet and more, yet passing like a guard and shooting from range, a center who changed what the position could be. He won Olympic gold with the Soviet Union in Seoul in 1988, at the height of his young powers.
The line does not run straight up. A ruptured Achilles tendon in the mid 1980s, and the years of surgery and rehabilitation that followed, cost him the springing athleticism of his youth and delayed for nearly a decade the NBA career that Portland had drafted him for in 1986. What he did with that loss is the point of his arc. Rather than let the injury be the ending, he rebuilt his game around vision, footwork and touch, and kept climbing on a body that had been remade.
When Lithuania returned to the Olympic Games under its own flag, he led a young side to bronze in Barcelona in 1992 and again in Atlanta in 1996, medals a whole country carried home. He finally reached the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1995 at thirty, and even then, slowed and worn, he was among the best passing big men the league had seen. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. His line is worth reading because the injury that was meant to define him is only one dot on it, and the line kept rising for twenty years after.
