Who is Dev Patel?
His mother saw the advert in a free paper. He had a science exam the next day.
He grew up in Rayners Lane in Harrow. His mother was a care worker and his father an IT consultant, both Gujarati and both born in Kenya. He became a fan of action films after sneaking downstairs and catching scenes of a Bruce Lee film on his parents' television. He describes himself as having been bloody energetic as a child and getting into trouble for it, and in 2000 he started training at a local taekwondo academy.
He competed nationally and internationally. At the world championships in Dublin in October 2004 he fought as a red belt in the junior division against red and black belts, reached the semi-finals, lost a close fight to an Irish black belt and took bronze. He earned a first dan black belt in March 2006. His first acting role was at school, as Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night.
In 2006 his mother saw a casting advertisement in a free newspaper and took him to the audition, although he had a science exam the next day. After two auditions he was cast in a teen drama with no prior professional acting experience at all. He has said that on the first day of shooting he did not really know what to do. He finished his A Levels the following year while working on the show.
Danny Boyle was casting a film and could not find what he wanted among established leads, who he thought were all strong handsome hero types. Boyle's seventeen year old daughter pointed him at the teen drama. After five auditions Patel was cast in August 2007, at seventeen, and the film went on to win Best Picture. Boyle put the reason plainly: he wanted a man who did not look like a potential hero, and wanted him to earn it in the film.
Then a film released in July 2010 to extremely negative reviews, a box office disappointment, and a nomination for Worst Supporting Actor. He has expressed regret about it and said he saw a stranger on the screen he could not relate to. What he did after that is the arc: comedy dramas, a science fiction thriller, a supporting part on an American drama series, and then Lion in 2016, which won him a British Academy Film Award and an Academy Award nomination. In 2024 he directed his first film, and Time magazine named him one of the hundred most influential people in the world.
