The character arc of Vanessa Nakate
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born 15 November 1996 in Kampala. Between then and now sit a business administration degree at Makerere, a solitary strike outside parliament in January 2019, two organisations founded, a cropped photograph in January 2020, a book in October 2021, a magazine cover, a UNICEF appointment in 2022, solar power in thirty schools, an honorary doctorate in 2025 and a master's at Oxford. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Vanessa Nakate?
They cut her out of the picture, and she would not have it.
She took a degree in business administration, in marketing, at Makerere University Business School in Kampala. In January 2019 she started a climate strike outside the Parliament of Uganda, on her own. Standing alone outside a parliament is a particular kind of decision, because for a long time nothing at all happens and everybody can see you doing it. She went on to found Youth for Future Africa and the Rise Up Movement.
In January 2020 she was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, photographed alongside Greta Thunberg and other activists. The Associated Press cropped her out of the picture. She said publicly that it reflected racism. The agency's executive editor apologised, and she questioned how sincere the response was. What matters on the line is not the apology but what she did: she refused to let it pass quietly, and the argument that followed put her and the African activists she worked with in front of an audience that had not been looking.
She set up a project to move Ugandan schools onto solar power and to install cleaner stoves, and thirty schools had been done by the time the record was written. Her memoir, A Bigger Picture, came out in October 2021, and she was on the cover of Time that November. She became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2022, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in 2025, and is taking a master of public policy at Oxford, on climate justice. Her line is worth reading because the moment she is best known for is one somebody else tried to erase.
The moments
Vanessa Nakate's timeline.
The 2010s
A business degree at Makerere
Milestone. Marketing. Not a campaigning degree, and it turned out to matter.
She struck alone
Milestone, and it changed everything. On her own, outside a parliament, where nothing happens for a long time and everybody can see you.
Two organisations
Milestone, and it changed her direction. She stopped being one person outside a building.
The 2020s
Cropped from the photograph
Setback, and it changed everything. She was in the room, and then she was not in the picture.
Let it go, or say it out loud
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: say it publicly, taken, or let it pass. The agency's executive editor apologised, and the attention that followed carried her and other African activists into rooms that had not been looking.
She would not let it pass
Milestone, and it changed everything. The picture removed her. What she did about it is why anybody knows her name.
Solar on thirty schools
Milestone, and it changed everything. Thirty roofs. Not a statement, a count.
A Bigger Picture
Milestone, and it changed her direction. The title is not subtle, and it is not meant to be.
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador
Milestone, and it changed everything. Three years from standing alone outside a parliament.
An honorary doctorate
Milestone. At twenty eight.
A master's at Oxford
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Back to being a student, to learn how the decisions are actually made.
She is campaigning yet, and nobody crops her out any more. What it has set moving is counted in buildings: thirty schools with solar on the roof, and a room full of people who now check who is in the photograph.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
Hers began with one person standing outside a building alone. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
