Who is Deepika Padukone?
She left the family sport, and India followed her anyway.
Her father is one of the great badminton players of his country and her grandfather ran a badminton association, so the sport was not a hobby in that house. She has described the routine: up at five in the morning for physical training, then school, then badminton again, then homework, then sleep. She played at national level, and some baseball at state level too. She also modelled as a child, first appearing in advertisements at eight.
In the tenth grade she changed her mind. She has said she realised she was playing the game only because it ran in the family. She left the sport for fashion modelling, enrolled for a sociology degree and dropped out when it clashed with the work, and took a first acting role in a Kannada film in 2006, at twenty. Her first Hindi release, a romance in 2007, gave her a double role opposite one of the biggest stars in the country and won her the award for best female debut. A well-received romance followed in 2009, and then, in the record's own word, a setback.
The turn came with a romantic comedy in 2012, and the decade after it is a run of the largest films India has made: romantic comedies, period dramas, a heist comedy, a Hollywood action film, and later some of the highest-grossing action pictures in the country's history. She won two Filmfare best actress awards, one for a version of Juliet and one for a headstrong daughter. She founded a foundation that works on mental health awareness in India, for which she was given an international award in 2018, was named to the Time 100 that year and given a Time impact award in 2022, produced two films under her own company, and has walked the Met Gala three times.
