Who is Byron Katie?

She was born in Texas and grew up in Barstow, out in the California desert. Her father drove trains. Her mother kept the house. She married at nineteen in San Bernardino, had three children, and built a career in real estate. On the outside, an ordinary and competent American life.

By 1986 she was forty three, with three children, unhappily married to her second husband, and by the record's account in a very bad way indeed: a long stretch of depression, unable to leave the house, eating to cope, using codeine and alcohol to get through the day. She rang her insurance company for help, and was referred to a women's counselling centre in Los Angeles.

Then came two weeks of self-reflection at home, and something shifted. The record calls it an epiphany in her thinking, and what it gave her was a way to take a long held belief and challenge it until it stopped doing damage. She credited it with the weight she lost and the habits she dropped. Her family, and one of the therapists from the centre, said she had changed as a person.

She did not do anything with it for a while. She began holding informal meetings to talk about what had happened, and in the early 1990s started running proper workshops. Those became Byron Katie International, which includes a school for the method and a house in Ojai where people come to do it. The method is four questions and a turnaround, and it fits on a postcard. A magazine has called her a spiritual innovator for the twenty first century. She is married to a writer and translator, and one of her children is a record producer.
