Who is Ke Huy Quan?
Hollywood stopped calling, and he kept the dream anyway.
He was born in Saigon in 1971, one of eight children in an ethnic Chinese family living in the Cholon district. In 1978 the family left Vietnam by boat, and left in two halves: he went with his father and five of his siblings to a refugee camp in Hong Kong, while his mother and three of his brothers and sisters reached Malaysia. They were reunited in the United States in 1979. He has said since that the whole of his later life turned on that crossing.
He went along to an open casting call with his brother, who was the one auditioning. The casting team watched him coaching from the sidelines and asked him to read, and in 1984 he appeared as Short Round opposite Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The Goonies followed in 1985. Then he grew up, and the parts written for Asian actors in Hollywood were few. By 1992 the work had thinned to almost nothing, and by the early 2000s he had stopped acting. He did not leave film. He earned a black belt in taekwondo, studied film at the University of Southern California, choreographed fight scenes on X-Men in 2000, and worked as an assistant director for Wong Kar-wai on 2046 in 2004.
The success in 2018 of a Hollywood film with an all Asian cast told him the industry had changed, and he hired an agent for the first time in decades. The audition that followed became Everything Everywhere All at Once, released in 2022, and on 12 March 2023 he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the first actor born in Vietnam to do so. Since then he has played Ouroboros in Loki in 2023, taken his first leading role in Love Hurts in 2025, and published his memoir Never Say Die in 2026. His line is worth reading because the two decades that look like an ending are the part he refused to treat as one.
