Who is Fatoumata Diawara?

She was born in Ouragahio in Ivory Coast to Malian parents, and as an adolescent was sent to Bamako to live with an aunt. Being sent away to relatives is where a great many West African lines begin, and hers gave her a city with a music scene in it.
She acted first. She appeared in Cheick Oumar Sissoko's Genesis in 1999 and in Dani Kouyate's Sia, le reve du python in 2001, before she was twenty. At eighteen she moved to France to pursue acting, and then the fact that shapes everything after it: she fled back to Paris to avoid being coerced into marriage by her family. She started making music around 2011 with the album Fatou, and describes herself as the first female solo electric guitar player in Mali, which is a claim about an instrument and about who is allowed to stand behind one. Her songs deal with emigration, women's rights and religious extremism, in Wassoulou music built out of the tradition she grew up in. She was nominated twice at the sixty first Grammy Awards, for Fenfo and for a dance recording with Disclosure, contributed to the film Timbuktu in 2014, which was nominated for an Academy Award, and has worked with Damon Albarn, Paul McCartney and Gorillaz.
