The character arc of Ana Ros
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born in 1972 in Sempeter pri Gorici, then in Yugoslavia. Between then and now sit a place in the Yugoslav youth alpine ski team given up rather than taken professionally, a degree in diplomacy at the University of Trieste, a kitchen in the village of Kobarid taken over in 2002 with no culinary training at all, and three Michelin stars in a country that had none until 2020. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Ana Ros?
She had never cooked professionally, and took the kitchen anyway.
She was born in 1972 in Sempeter pri Gorici, in what was then Yugoslavia, and grew up as a serious alpine skier, good enough for the Yugoslav youth national team. She decided not to make a career of it. She went instead to study diplomacy at the University of Trieste, in Gorizia, and was heading towards a diplomatic service, which is a straight and respectable line and not the one she is on.
She met Valter Kramar, whose family ran Hisa Franko, a restaurant with rooms in Kobarid, a village in the Soca valley near the Italian border. In 2002 the arrangement at the restaurant changed and the kitchen needed somebody. She took it. She had no formal culinary training of any kind, and she learned on the job, from her mother in law and a family friend, while running a working restaurant in a place most people had to be given directions to find.
It took years and then it did not stop. A Netflix episode in 2016 made her known well outside Slovenia, and the World's 50 Best academy named her the World's Best Female Chef in 2017. When the Michelin guide finally came to Slovenia in 2020, Hisa Franko was the first restaurant in the country to be rated at all, and it was given two stars immediately. A third followed in 2023, and it held all three in the 2026 guide. She published Sun and Rain in 2020. Her line is worth reading because she was not trying to become a chef, and there was no plan behind any of it.
The moments
Ana Ros's timeline.
The 1980s
A place on the ski team
Milestone, and it changed everything. Good enough to be selected for a country, in a sport that country was very good at.
The 1990s
She walked away from skiing
Setback, and it changed everything. The first career put down before it started, and the first time she left something she was already good at.
Diplomacy, in Italy
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A degree pointing at an embassy, in a life that was about to go somewhere else entirely.
The 2000s
The embassy, or the kitchen
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: take over the restaurant kitchen, taken, or go into the diplomatic service. Hisa Franko became the first Michelin rated restaurant in Slovenia in 2020 with two stars, and took a third in 2023.
She took the kitchen
Milestone, and it changed everything. The restaurant needed a chef and she said she would do it, with no training and no experience of a professional kitchen.
No training, and a restaurant
Setback, and it changed everything. Learning the trade in public, service by service, in a working restaurant, with nobody to fall back on.
The 2010s
Chef's Table
Milestone, and it changed everything. Fourteen years in the kitchen, and then one episode and the bookings came from everywhere.
World's Best Female Chef
Milestone, and it changed everything. International recognition for a self-taught cook in a village most of the voters had never been to.
The 2020s
Slovenia gets its first stars
Milestone, and it changed everything. Her country had no Michelin rating of any kind. The first one awarded in it was two stars, to her.
Sun and Rain
Milestone. The book, in the same year as the stars.
A third Michelin star
Milestone, and it changed everything. The highest rating the guide gives, twenty one years after she walked into the kitchen untrained.
Three stars, held
Milestone. Keeping three stars is harder than getting them, and the village restaurant has kept them.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is a country on the culinary map that was not on it before 2020, and a village in the Soca valley that people now fly in order to eat in.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
Hers changed direction twice before thirty and then went further than either original plan. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
