Who is Asma Khan?
She arrived unable to cook, and fed London anyway.
She was born in Kolkata in July 1969, the second daughter. Her father is Rajput, from a line that includes a Nawab of Chhatari, and her mother, from West Bengal, ran a catering business through the 1970s and 1980s. She has talked a great deal since about what being a second daughter means in India and about the silence around the disappointment it can cause, while being clear that her own parents treated their children equally. In 1991 she married and moved with her husband to Cambridge.
She arrived unable to cook. Not unable to cook well: unable to cook, having never been taught, and homesick for food she could not reproduce. She learned from an aunt in England, then properly from her mother and the family cook on visits back to India. Meanwhile she studied law, and in 2012 she completed a doctorate in British constitutional law at King's College London.
In the same year she started cooking for strangers in her own flat. The supper club moved into a Soho pub in 2015, and Darjeeling Express opened as a restaurant in Soho in 2017, then in Covent Garden until March 2022, then at Kingly Court. The kitchen is staffed entirely by South Asian immigrant women, many of them home cooks with no professional training and many of them second daughters, which is not a marketing position but the entire point. In February 2019 she became the first British chef profiled on Chef's Table. Time named her among its hundred most influential people in 2024, and Monsoon was published in March 2025. Her line is worth reading because she qualified as a constitutional lawyer and chose the kitchen.
