The character arc of Nikhil Kamath
Born 5 September 1986 in Karnataka. Between then and now sit a decision to leave school at seventeen, a job answering phones in a call centre, the first stock trades made on the side, a small sub-broking firm started with his brother Nithin, the founding of Zerodha in 2010, its climb to become India's largest retail broker with no outside funding, the investment firms True Beacon and Gruhas, a pledge to give away half of what he has, and a podcast that opens up what he has learned. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Nikhil Kamath?
The dropout who built India's largest broker.
He was born in Karnataka in 1986 and left school at seventeen, without a degree and without a plan that anyone would have called safe. He took a job in a call centre and traded stocks in whatever time was left, learning the markets by being inside them rather than reading about them. By his early twenties he and his older brother Nithin were running a small sub-broking firm, handling money for other people and watching how the industry worked from the inside.
In 2010 the brothers founded Zerodha, a discount brokerage that charged a flat fee instead of a cut of every trade, and built it with no venture money, no celebrity faces and no advertising. The idea was to make investing cheap enough that ordinary people could take part, and it worked slowly and then all at once: by 2019 Zerodha had more active clients than any other broker in India, and it had done it while staying entirely its own. He went on to found True Beacon and Gruhas to invest more widely.
What he has become known for beyond the numbers is giving the knowledge back. In 2023 he signed the Giving Pledge, one of the youngest people in the world to do so, committing to give away most of what he has. In 2024 he launched the WTF podcast, sitting down with founders, scientists and builders and letting the conversations run long. His line is worth reading because it starts with a teenager who left the usual path, and reaches a person who now spends his time opening doors for the people behind him.

Trade for others, or build

The paths laid out: build a brokerage of their own, taken, or keep trading for others. They built Zerodha, and by 2019 it was the largest retail broker in the country.
India's largest retail broker
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Zerodha passed every other broker in India for active clients, and had stayed entirely its own.

Founded Gruhas

Hold it, or give it away
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: pledge most of it away, taken, or keep building in private. He signed the Giving Pledge as one of its youngest signatories, and turned to opening doors for others.
Launched the WTF podcast
Milestone. He began sitting down with founders, scientists and builders, and letting the conversations run long.
A harder year for Zerodha
Setback. Revenue dipped as new rules cooled trading, a reminder that even a line that has climbed can flatten.
The line reaches today still investing, still recording, still giving, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is already everywhere: the millions who now invest for a flat fee, and every young builder who heard that you do not need the usual path to start.
In his words
Quotes by Nikhil Kamath
Timing is everything. People often fail to recognise its importance.
I have been quite lucky and in the right place at the right time, with great colleagues who have shared my journey.
