The character arc of Richard Branson
Born 18 July 1950 in London. Between then and now sit a boy with dyslexia who struggled at school and left at sixteen, a national magazine begun in his teens, records first sold by post under the name Virgin, a record label that signed Mike Oldfield and the Sex Pistols, an airline founded in 1984 against most advice, crossings of the Atlantic and the Pacific by hot-air balloon, a knighthood for services to entrepreneurship, and a flight to the edge of space aboard a craft his own company built. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Richard Branson?
The school-leaver who reached for space.
He was born in London in 1950 and grew up with dyslexia at a time when schools had no word for it and little patience for it. He struggled with lessons and left school at sixteen, and his headmaster told him he would either go to prison or become a millionaire. What he had instead of grades was nerve and a knack for talking people into things. In 1968, still a teenager, he started a national magazine called Student, and by 1970 he was selling records by post under a name a colleague suggested because they were all new to business: Virgin.
The first Virgin record shop opened in London in 1971, and the record label followed in 1972. Its first release, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, became a lasting success and paid for what came next, and Virgin went on to sign artists others would not touch, from the Sex Pistols to a long line of names after them. In 1984 he did the thing nobody advised, putting the music company's money behind a single aircraft to launch Virgin Atlantic, an airline with no fleet and no track record, and it grew into the group's best known company.
His line does not run straight, and it never sat still. He crossed the Atlantic by hot-air balloon in 1987 and the Pacific in 1991, setting records and more than once being fished from the sea. He was knighted in 2000 for services to entrepreneurship. In 2004 he founded Virgin Galactic to carry people to space, a bet that took seventeen years and cost lives among the test crews before it flew, and in July 2021 he rode his own craft to the edge of space himself. His line is worth reading because it starts with a boy who could not sit an exam and keeps climbing into the sky.

The line reaches today still climbing, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. He still leads the group he named as a beginner and still chases the next record, and the boy who left school at sixteen is only the first dot on a line that kept rising.
In his words
Quotes by Richard Branson
If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity and you are not sure you can do it, say yes, then learn how to do it later.
You do not learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing and by falling over.
Your turn
Every story draws a unique line.
His is seven decades in and still being drawn. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about three minutes.
