Who is Armand Duplantis?
A pit in the garden at four, and ten world titles.
He was born into an athletic family in Louisiana. His American father is a former pole vaulter with a personal best of five metres eighty, and his Swedish mother is a former heptathlete and volleyball player. He grew up speaking English and learned Swedish as a second language, and spent summers with his Swedish grandparents. His two older brothers and his younger sister all took up sport, one brother representing Sweden as a pole vaulter at two world youth and junior championships and his sister competing professionally in the event, also for Sweden.
He first tried pole vaulting as a four-year-old at the family home in Lafayette, in a pit his family had. That is an unusual advantage and it is worth saying plainly: almost nobody gets to start this event at four, because almost nobody has anywhere to do it. He finished school in 2018 and, like his parents and brothers before him, went to Louisiana State University, then left in 2019 after his first year in order to turn professional.
He competes for Sweden, and he has taken ten senior global titles. He is Olympic champion from 2020 and 2024, world outdoor champion in 2022, 2023 and 2025, world indoor champion in 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026, and the first world ultimate champion, in 2026. He holds the pole vault world record at six metres thirty one, a mark he has raised repeatedly rather than in one jump, which is how that particular record has always been broken.
The moments
Armand Duplantis's timeline.
The 1990s
An athletic family
Everyday. A vaulter and a heptathlete, and four children.
The 2000s
A first vault at four
Milestone, and it changed everything. Four years old, in his own garden, on a real runway.
Two languages, two countries
Everyday. Summers in Sweden, and the language that came with them.
A family of vaulters
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Three siblings in serious sport, two of them in the same event.
The 2010s
School, then university
Milestone. The family university, taken like everybody else in the family.
He leaves after one year
Milestone, and it changed everything. One year of a degree, and then he went full time.
Finish the degree
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: turn professional, taken, or stay the four years. He became Olympic champion in 2020 and 2024 and holds the world record at six metres thirty one.
The 2020s
Olympic champion
Milestone, and it changed everything. The Olympic title, and then it again four years later.
World champion, indoors and out
Milestone, and it changed everything. Seven world titles across two seasons of the year.
Ten senior global titles
Milestone, and it changed everything. Ten global titles, and a new competition won at its first running.
Six metres thirty one
Milestone, and it changed everything. The highest any human being has cleared.
Louisiana raised him and Sweden is on the vest, and both families are in the record. What it has set moving is a bar that keeps going up: he has raised the world record by centimetres at a time, over and over, so that a height nobody had cleared is now the one everybody is chasing.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
His had a pole vault pit in the garden at four, and still had to do all the rest of it. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
