A vision board alternative that shows the path.

A vision board shows you what you want. It does not show where you are, what you have already come through, or whether anything moved. An alternative worth having keeps the picture and adds the evidence: the path behind you, the intentions ahead of you, and a record of what you actually did about them.

What a vision board is good at

Naming the thing. That is not nothing: a want you have never said out loud stays comfortably vague, and vague wants are the ones that quietly expire. The honest row is the last one. A line is only as true as what you put on it, and an empty one says nothing at all.

What to look for in an alternative

Three things, in this order. It should hold the past as well as the future, because a goal without a starting point cannot be measured. It should not punish a gap, since the weeks you miss are usually the weeks you most needed something forgiving. And the record should be readable years later by the person who wrote it, which rules out anything that only makes sense while you are inside it.

Do vision boards actually work?

They work at the part they are for: naming what you want and keeping it in front of you, which changes what you notice. They do nothing about evidence, so people often keep the board and add something that records what they did.

What is better than a vision board?
