What is a life timeline?

A life timeline is your whole life drawn as one line, in order, from the day you were born to today. Every event that shaped you sits at its own date, so the shape between them, the climbs, the flat years and the dips, is something you can see at a glance instead of something you hold in memory.

What goes on a life timeline

The events you would name without thinking: where you grew up, the thing that ended, the person you met, the year that took more than it gave. Each one carries a date, which way it turned you, and how much it mattered.

Three kinds of mark cover almost everything. A milestone climbs. A setback dips. An everyday moment runs level, and quiet stretches simply stay flat rather than sliding down, because nothing decays on a timeline just because time passed.

Why a line beats a list

Memory does not store your life in order. It stores what was loud, and it keeps whatever fits the verdict you already reached, which is confirmation bias doing its ordinary work. Ask somebody how the last five years went and you will usually get the last five weeks, weighted by whatever happened most recently.

A line has no opinion about which year deserves attention. Proportion is the thing it gives you back: the stretch you remember as wasted turns out to contain three marks, and the year you call the worst one is followed by the steepest climb on the page.

The part that has not happened yet

A timeline that stops at today is a record. The useful version keeps going: what you are aiming at sits ahead of the present as an intention, and a decision you are weighing can be laid out as paths, so the future is a place on the same line as the past rather than a separate document.

That is also what turns it from an archive into something you use. You can see the road you are on beside the road you came down, which is the comparison most people never get to make.

What is the difference between a life timeline and a journal?

A journal records what happened on a day, in prose, and reads in one direction. A life timeline records where each day sits relative to every other day, so the whole is visible at once. Most people who keep both use the line to find the entry.

How far back should a life timeline go?

To the day you were born. Starting at the day you began keeping it hides the part that explains you, and it is also the part that takes no effort to fill: you already know what the big ones were.

Do I need exact dates?

No. The month is usually enough, and the year alone is enough for anything more than a decade old. A mark placed softly at the right precision is more honest than one invented to look precise.
