She finished school in Delhi in 2001, went to IIT Madras that year, and came out with an electrical engineering degree in 2005, having collected two gold and two silver medals across four inter-college sports meets on the way. Then an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad, finishing in 2007.
During the MBA she interned at a bank, and was offered a job at a salary of ten million rupees a year. She turned it down. She and another graduate who turned down the same offer wanted to start a lingerie business instead, and it did not take off, because they could not raise the funding.
A second venture, providing background verification checks to recruiters, also failed to succeed. That is two companies gone before she was thirty, having already refused the salary that would have made either failure irrelevant. In 2012 she started a third, a subscription platform delivering beauty products monthly.
In 2015 she founded Sugar Cosmetics with her husband, selling cosmetics aimed at the Indian market and at a range of skin tones the industry had been ignoring. It worked. Private equity money came in, a film star invested and became a public advocate for it in September 2022, and she appeared on the covers of the business magazines. She has also said that funding was once granted only on the condition that her husband join the company full time, which she viewed as gender discrimination.
The recent record is not a straight line either. In early 2024 she was preparing the company for a flotation within two or three years, and had just recorded the first profitable month in its history with revenue up about a fifth. In 2025 revenue fell, the company made a substantial loss, and the flotation was pushed back another two years. Alongside all of it she has run twenty marathons and ultramarathons and twelve half marathons, the eighty nine kilometre Comrades three years running, and an Ironman triathlon in 2017.
