Who was Tenzing Norgay?

Six times he carried the loads, and the seventh time he stood there.

He was born in May 1914, though the day is not recorded and where is disputed: his own autobiography says Tengboche in Nepal, while later accounts place his birth in the Kama Valley in Tibet, with his childhood at Thame in Nepal. He was named Namgyal Wangdi and given the name Tenzing as a child on the advice of a lama. From the age of twenty he went on Everest expeditions as a porter, through the nineteen thirties and forties, carrying other men's equipment up a mountain other men were going to be famous for.

In 1952 the Swiss expeditions changed his standing. On 28 May he and Raymond Lambert reached about 8,595 metres, a new altitude record, and he was recognised as a full member of an expedition rather than as hired labour. They did not summit. They were closer than anybody had been.

On 29 May 1953, at half past eleven in the morning, he and Edmund Hillary became the first confirmed people to stand on the summit of Everest. Afterwards he was asked repeatedly, and in some quarters insistently, who had stepped up first, as if the answer decided something. He answered it plainly: Hillary stepped on top first, and he stepped up after him. In 1954 he became the first Director of Field Training at India's Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which is the part of the line that mattered most for everybody who came after him. His line is worth reading for the six expeditions before the one anybody remembers.
