Who is Quinta Brunson?
She left college for comedy, and wrote her mother's job.
She was born and raised in West Philadelphia, the youngest of five children, which is what her name means: it is taken from the Spanish word for fifth. Her mother taught kindergarten and her father managed parking lots. She was raised in a faith she left at twenty one. She has described herself as obsessed with comedy from her time at a design-focused high school, and nurtured it by taking an improv class.
She went to Temple University, took classes at a Chicago improv theatre in her second year, and dropped out shortly afterwards to move to Los Angeles. In 2014 she came to notice with a series she produced herself and posted online, and from there went to a digital media company, where she produced and acted in videos and developed two streaming series. It is an unglamorous apprenticeship, done in public, for about seven years.
The show she made out of it is about her mother's job. Abbott Elementary began in 2021, a network comedy set in an underfunded Philadelphia public school in which she plays a second-grade teacher, and she created it, executive produces it and co-writes it. At the seventy fourth Emmy Awards she became the first Black woman nominated three times in the comedy category in a single year, winning for writing, and at the seventy fifth she became the first Black woman in over forty years to win outstanding lead actress in a comedy. The show won a Peabody in 2022 and she was named to the Time 100 the same year. She has also acted in several other series and done voice work, including for a long-running animated show.
