The character arc of Nedra Glover Tawwab
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born and raised in Detroit, in a year the public record does not publish. Between then and now sit training as a social worker and therapist, a practice begun in Detroit, a move to Charlotte in 2009 and a counselling practice of her own, an account created in 2017 that reached about two thousand followers in two years, a newspaper feature that changed everything, 1.9 million followers by October 2023, a first book in March 2021 that spent four weeks on the New York Times list, three more books, and a place on a list of influential people in health. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Nedra Glover Tawwab?
Two years, two thousand followers. Then one article.
She was born and raised in Detroit and began her therapy practice there, as a mental health therapist and social worker. In 2009 she relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, and opened her own counselling practice. That is the first fifteen years of the working life: ordinary clinical work, one room, one client at a time.
She created an Instagram account in 2017 and grew it to around two thousand followers over the next two years. Two thousand, in two years. Anybody would have called that a failure and stopped. Then she was featured in a newspaper article, and the numbers went vertical. By October 2023 she had 1.9 million followers.
What she posts is her clinical subject, in very short form: healthy relationships and boundaries, which she describes as something that keeps you safe and comfortable in your relationships. The posts cover everything from forgiveness to realistic goals, in bite sized chunks, and they are the same material she would say in a session.
Her first book, Set Boundaries, Find Peace, came out in March 2021 and spent four weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. A workbook followed, then a book on managing unhealthy family relationships in 2023, a book of reflections in 2024, and one in 2026 on dependency and connection. In 2024 she was named to a list of the hundred most influential people in health.
The moments
Nedra Glover Tawwab's timeline.
The 2000s
A practice in Detroit
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Clinical work, in the city she grew up in.
Charlotte, and her own room
Milestone, and it changed everything. A new city, and a practice with her own name on it.
The 2010s
She starts posting
Milestone, and it changed everything. One account, started from nothing, in 2017.
Two thousand, in two years
Setback, and it changed everything. Two years of posting, and about two thousand people watching.
Keep posting to nobody
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: keep going anyway, taken, or stop and see clients. One article later the account grew to 1.9 million, and the first book was a bestseller.
One newspaper article
Milestone, and it changed everything. One article, and the two slow years turned into something else.
The 2020s
The subject she chose
Milestone, and it changed her direction. One clinical subject, cut into pieces small enough to read on a phone.
Set Boundaries, Find Peace
Milestone, and it changed everything. A first book, and four weeks on the bestseller list.
Drama Free
Milestone, and it changed her direction. The harder book, about the relationships you cannot resign from.
Nearly two million
Milestone, and it changed everything. From two thousand to one point nine million.
A hundred in health
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Named among the hundred most influential people in health.
The Balancing Act
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A fourth book, about needing people without disappearing.
She is still in practice, and still posting the same material she would say across a room. What she set moving is a whole vocabulary that people now have for the thing they could not previously name, learned in bite sized pieces from a therapist who spent two years talking to almost nobody.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
Hers spent two years at two thousand followers before anything happened. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
